POPLAR - American
Botanical name: Populus
spp. Family: Salicaceae
- Distribution: Canada
and the USA
- Characteristics: The
sapwood is creamy white in colour and the heartwood is grayish white to
light brown. The wood is free form appreciable odour and taste, is inclined to
be woolly, but generally fine and even textured, with a straight grain. Poplar
is non-durable.
- Working qualities: The
timber works easily, although there may be a tendency to bind on the saw. A
smooth surface can be obtained, but sharp tools are needed to avoid wooly
surfaces in planing. The wood can be nailed, screwed, glued, stained and
finishes well.
- Uses: Match
splints, wood wool, boxes and crates, interiors of furniture and interior
fitments.
