POPLAR - American

Botanical name: Populus spp.
Family: Salicaceae

  • Distribution: Canada and the USA

  • Characteristics: The sapwood is creamy white in colour and the heartwood is grayish white to light brown. The wood is free form appreciable odour and taste, is inclined to be woolly, but generally fine and even textured, with a straight grain. Poplar is non-durable.

  • Working qualities: The timber works easily, although there may be a tendency to bind on the saw. A smooth surface can be obtained, but sharp tools are needed to avoid wooly surfaces in planing. The wood can be nailed, screwed, glued, stained and finishes well.

  • Uses: Match splints, wood wool, boxes and crates, interiors of furniture and interior fitments.
