AFGHAN

Origin and use: This is a very ancient dog. Cave drawings more than 4000 years old have been found in the Bakh regions of Northern Afghanistan depicting dogs which closely resemble this breed. Highly prized as hunters of deer, wild goats and even snow tigers and wolves by nomadic chieftains they were also used as herders and watch dogs in Afghanistan.
Weight: dog 25 to 30 kg, bitch 20 to 25 kg.
Height: dog 66 to 74 cm bitch 60 to 69 cm
Temperament: reserved, dignified, independent, intelligent
Useful information: With its long, silky coat this hardy dog is able to withstand heat, cold and rain. As a hunter it must be able to run itself out at least once a day. The coat requires a good deal of upkeep and must be thoroughly brushed every day and bathed with a good dog shampoo at least once a month. Afghans are sensitive dogs so handle them gently.
